Description
As part of the MAIA consortium, CATAG has developed the MAIA toolkit for guiding the safe perioperative management of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists. This toolkit will assist Medicines and Therapeutic Advisory Committees to support the implementation of local perioperative management guidelines for SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists and promote effective patient-centred education at discharge.
This toolkit consists of:
- Perioperative management of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists practice tool for Medicines and Therapeutics Advisory Committees
- Perioperative management of SGLT2 inhibitors and blood ketone testing teaching tool for clinical educators.
Key messages
- SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) require careful consideration and management in the perioperative period.
- Use the term ‘SGLT2 inhibitor-associated diabetic ketoacidosis’ in people with diabetes and ‘SGLT2 inhibitor-associated ketoacidosis’ in people without diabetes.
- Use point-of-care blood ketone testing in hospital to detect and monitor for ketoacidosis in all people whose SGLT2 inhibitor therapy has been withheld or who are unwell.
- Management of GLP-1RA therapy in the perioperative period is an area of emerging evidence.
- ‘Sip Til Send’ policies should include provisions for people taking GLP-1RAs.
- At transitions of care, provide clear advice on when to resume SGLT2 inhibitor and any follow up or monitoring that is required
